POWER RANKINGS MID SEASON By Player Position

Fantasy experts know exactly what's going to happen every pre season, right?  Love watching players prove fantasy loud mouths wrong.  The biggest surprise performers  include Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, Kurt Warner, Jay Cutler, Aquan Boldin, Roddy White, Santana Moss, Matt Forte, Chris Johnson, Clinton Portis, etc.  Crazy busts include Larry Johnson, Ryan Grant, Stephen Jackson, Marshawn Lynch, Willis McGahee, Chad Johnson, Braylon Edwards, Roy Williams, Terrell Owens, and Ben Roethlisberger,

Tom Brady and Randy Moss don't count.  Can LaDanian Tomlinson bust even as top 10 fantasy back?  We think he can.

AP/Carlos Osorio

QB

1. Drew Brees - 2985 yards is ridiculous for Saints team who's playoff hopes are slipping away.  Doesn't seem to matter who lines up at receiver

2. Kurt Warner - 2400+ yards and limiting turnovers to one really bad game.  Best playmakers on the outside with Boldin and Fitzgerald
3. Jay Cutler - Broncos forgot to run, the mad bomber is has 2600+ yards and 18 touchdowns and great receivers on the outside
4. Tony Romo - injury prevents gunslinger from a fantasy top 3 at the half way.  Sick weapons with the addtion of Texas wide receiver Roy Williams
5. Philip Rivers - Chargers forgot to run too.  The emergence of Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd along with LT, Gates, and Chambers has you wondering how this team is currently out of the playoffs.  Leads the league with 21 touchdowns
6. Peyton Manning - soft schedule coming up as the knee gets stronger.  Run game is terrible so expect better results in the second half
7. Aaron Rodgers - tough stretch for Pack but too many weapons not to be effective.  Jennings should spring a few with run after the catch in cold weather
8. Donovan McNabb - finally has all his weapons healthy to go with rookie sensation Deshaun Jackson and MVP candidate Brian Westbrook
9. Eli Manning - limiting turnovers and balanced attack for Super Bowl Champ
10. Matt Ryan - might be high but he's throwing 2 td's per game of late and keeps improving.  Roddy White is now elite.
11. Kyle Orton -  if his knee is only a minor setback, Bears look surprisingly balanced
12. Brett Favre - good receivers, solid run game, lots of turnovers
13. David Garrard - when he starts running look out, stats add up in a hurry, Jags could be better in second half
14. Ben Rothlisberger - hangs on to the ball too long but this is a low ranking for a top 6 Fantasy QB last year and former Super Bowl Champ.  Disappointing but stupid tough schedule.
15. Jake Delhomme - he's gotta be better in warm weather and soft schedule.  There O should be dangerous but average so far
16. Matt Cassel - he's steadily improving and managing the Belichick gameplan, Moss will slide by defenders in cold slippy weather

*Every other QB is a spot starter.  Schaub is the best of the rest if he can stay on the field and Brady Quinn is the wildcard

RB

1. Clinton Portis - Stellar and consistent play all year for a team that runs the West Coast with the Hog twist.  Runs hard without turning the ball over.  Plus he catches and blocks nasty.  995 yards on the ground.  150 thru the air.  7 touchdowns has the Skins in the hunt.

2. Marion Barber - Romo coming back changes everything and he's the second ranked fantasy back despite some slow games with Romo out.  A touchdown machine when he's going
3. Adrian Peterson - it's only a matter of time before he goes off.  Run game often improves in a second half and Vikes are heavy up front
4. LaDanian Tomlinson - probably doesn't deserve this rank but it's all about pockets of good play and not necessarily full seasons.  He could lead the league in second half and still justify #1 pick
5. Frank Gore - third ranked fantasy back on a bad team.  Look for Singletary power game to trump
6. Michael Turner - Atlanta keeps doing it and Turner/White combo is lethal even though everyone on the field knows it's going to them
7. Brian Westbrook - missed a few games with twisted ankle, top three otherwise
8. Matt Forte - statement game for both rookies between the Bears and Titans at the half way marker.  Forte gets the edge because Fat Lenny steals goaline.  Forte runs with steadiness, vision, and power
9. Chris Johnson - the fastest player in the NFL at 4.24 and deadly in the Titans run game
10. Brandon Jacobs - how do you stop this guy on the goaline?  He's a beast.
11. Reggie Bush - should be back soon and Saints have struggled since he went down.  10th ranked fantasy back despite missed time.
12. Maurice Jones Drew - he's only ranked 20th but should spike stats in second half
13. Ronnie Brown - Miami's best player and renewed optimism with the Wildcat.  9 touchdowns including one at QB
14. Thomas Jones - The Jets should be able to run if they want too.  Expect colder weather to spike TJ's touches
15. Steve Slaton - worry about Houston because they can throw up a stinker.  Rookie has been explosive at times
16. Ryan Grant - stats don't justify this rank but it was right about now when the Pack started running wild last year.  He's averaged 90 yards over his last 4 games and can take it to the house as evidenced by his league leading runs over 20 yards last year.  1 td is not happening in the second half
17. Earnest Graham - great year last year, expect an upgrade in the second half on team that likes to run
18. Stephen Jackson - top 5 talent but can't stay on the field
19. Marshawn Lynch - disappointing Bills run game.  Only 3 100 yard games since he broke in.  Needs blockers desparately
20. Lendale White - you don't count yards per carry in Fantasy so if you're interested in a TD+ per game
21. Tim Hightower - rockets up the board because it looks like Cards have passed the torch from the Edge.  7 td's from the rook
22. Jamal Lewis - surprising last year, plodding this year, we'll take somewhere in the middle and expect a stronger second half when defenders get worn out
23. Sammy Morris - Pats run game could be ready and waiting for Morris return from knee.  Or Ben Jarvis Green Ellis and Kevin Faulk could steal carries.  Risky.
24. Joseph Addai - he's currently ranked 42?  No idea.  Rhodes has more fantasy points
25. Willis McGahee - roller coaster run game in Baltimore.  Ray Rice and Leron McCalin poaching carries due to McGahee injury woes.  Cream will rise
26. Willie Parker - banking on Wille getting healthy and Steeler run game improving.  Otherwise you can sub in Mewelde Moore right here or higher
27. Kevin Smith - gets the rock by default and playing well of late on worst team in NFL
28. DeAngelo Williams - if either he or Stewart gets hurt they rocket up the board but otherwise cannibalize each other
29. Darren McFadden - if he gets healthy, watch for the Raiders to see what they have, could be trouble in Fantasy playoffs

BUST - Larry Johnson - 2 huge games, what a tease, Ben Jarvis Green Ellis - Pats mislead about injuries so he could finish as feature back ahead of injured Sammy Morris, Selvin Young, Joseph Addai

SECOND HALF SLEEPERS - Justin Fargas, Ricky Williams, Mewelde Moore, *If you can figure out who the Denver Broncos start it's worth a waiver pick

WR

1. Anquan Boldin - You heard me.  He misses 2 games after getting brained in the end zone on a cheap hit otherwise he's likely #1 in fantasy stats.  He returns from scary injury with statement game and 2 touchdowns, got a bad contract and easy schedule.  All Pro so far.
2. Roddy White - backs up breakout year with studly first half.  Imagine when the rookie qb Matt Ryan gains some experience.  6 td's always welcome in fantasy leagues.
3. Larry Fitzgerald - 742 yards and 5 scores.  Warner leads NFL in touchdowns since week 10 of last year.  Prolific
4. Steve Smith - 5 games in a row with 96 yards or more.  2 missed games due to attack dog suspension.  He's just warming up and Carolina's sched better in the second half.
5. Andre Johnson - if the touchdowns catch up to this yardage monster (834), watch out.  Schaub getting hurt may downgrade him slightly but Houston playing better in general especially at home.
6. Terrell Owens - pains me because TO has acted like such a suck but Romo is the difference maker.  Look for Cowboys to rebound after tough stretch.  He's still dominating with a qb.  Roy Williams and Jason Witten hoping enough balls to go around
7. Calvin Johnson - by default he moves into top 10, lots of garbage time and tremendous talent for second year receiver
8. Gregg Jennings - Pack will get it going after weathering mediocre stretch.  More yards after the catch in cold weather because db's can't gain footing.
9. Lee Evans - he used to be a second half player, with this start he might finish #1.  Expect more touchdowns
10. Reggie Wayne - over the next 4 you got guys who are underachieving but can bounce back in a hurry.  Peyton's knee feels more stable and Wayne will round into form
11. Brandon Marshall - was crushing it to begin season but tailed off lately.  Had a huge bomb called back last week against Miami and should go in the top 5 next year
12. Randy Moss - pre season #1 starting to come around with Matt Cassell.  Still not the same threat without Brady.
13. Santana Moss - obviously this dart could rank in the top 5 with huge season including return td, but Moss finds a way to get hurt in plodding offense.  Not buying the results so far
14. Braylon Edwards - top 5 talent with major case of the dropsies.  Now Quinn takes over at qb
15.  Marques Colston - if he gets healthy, Brees will rekindle chemistry with favorite target.
16. Hines Ward - we've got him here for consistency, whenever Steel needa first down, it's Hinesy over the middle, expect similar numbers and big catches
17. Chris Chambers - gotta rank him ahead of Vincent Jackson don't you?  Charg could make a run
18. Laverneous Coles - touchdown chemistry with Brett Favre for gutsy receiver
19. TJ Houshmanzadeh - just not the same without Palmer but heady receiver and improving qb.  He should be top 10
20. Plaxico Burress - looking to fly up the rankings in second half and currently 36 in fantasy points.  Not motivated.  Lots of weapons in Giantland
21. Dwayne Bowe - #1 receiver on bad team puts in solid first off.  On pace for 1000 yards
22. Bernard Berrian - not buying it but maybe Ferotte can still throw a little.  Great first half and 9th in fantasy stats
23. Desean Jackson - could move up the board or maybe less looks as the pressure mounts for rookie sensation, 1 td not so hot
24. Kevin Walter - put him here purely to piss off my fantasy buddies.  5 touchdowns to prove doubters wrong
25. Chad Johnson - pulls the disppearing act for first half but finishes with multi td game against Jags.  Tough call.
26. Jerricho Cotchery - Favre works well with 2 receivers minimum
27. Antonio Bryant - Gruden loves this guys heart apparently, just wondering why we've waited this long?
28. Derek Mason - keeps on trucking with rookie qb Flacco
29. Donnie Avery - highest drafted rookie moves up the board quickly as Rams get comfortable with lights out speed.  Ahead of Torry Holt?
30. Santonio Holmes - needs to step up or year turns to bust
31. Donald Drvier - could have better second half
32. Matt Jones - a suspension for cocaine could move Jones off the board but big target finally progresses thru first half
33. Eddie Royal - an ankle injury slowed this high flyer down but we like his explosion, feast or famine
34. Lance Morre - if Colston can't come back effectively, look for Moore to move the chains and up the board.  Decent red zone play as well
35. Anthony Gonzalez - anytime you play for the Colts, you can score fantasy points in bunches and Harrison have the same jump
36. Roy Williams - too many weapons in Dallas and not enough time.  Couple big games but mostly below average.  Look for Roy to solidify top 15 spot next year with TO run out of town

SELL - Devrey Henderson/Saints, Matt Jones/Jags (suspension coming)

BUY - Mike Walker/Jags, Ted Ginn Jr./Fins, Josh Morgan/49ers, Justin Gage/Titans, Devin Hester/Bears, Shaun MacDonald/Lions, Deion Branch/Hawks

TE

1. Antonio Gates - moves past Witten for health reasons, due for big second half and leads TE's with 6 td's
2. Jason Witten - lots of weapons to spread ball around.  Cowboys trending the wrong way but Romo after the bye changes everything.  Witten is a stud even though banged up
3. Tony Gonzalez - Hall Of Famer on bad team, always productive
4. Chris Cooley - hoping for more fantasy points
5. Dallas Clark - could be dangerous in second half
6. Owen Daniels - solid option in high powered pass attack
7. Kellen Winslow - 19th ranked fantasy TE must step up
8. Zach Miller - 77 total yards by the entire Raiders offense last week against Falcons says this is high.  Just waiting for Jemarcus to please show up
9. Anthony Fasano - Parcells' boy
10. Greg Olsen - surprising offensively, Bears have lots of options suddenly.  QB Orton nicked is a problem
11. Tony Scheffler - he moves up the board when healthy
12. Bo Scaife - who would have predicted he'd be better than Alge Crumpler

SPOT STARTERS - Vinshanthe Shimacoe/Vikes, Billy Miller/Saints, Alex Smith/Bucs, Marcedes Lewis/Jags, Robert Royal/Bills, John Carlson/Hawks

VERY DISAPPOINTING - Vernon Davis/49ers, Jeremy Shockey/Saints, Kellen Winslow/Browns
